Ask where the delivery team physically sits
Many Hong Kong-based "IT outsourcing companies" are sales offices reselling capacity from an unrelated offshore vendor, with no visibility into who's actually writing your code or managing your infrastructure. Ask directly: who works on my account, where are they based, and can I talk to them?
Check for real industry experience, not just technical certifications
Microsoft, AWS and Google Cloud partner badges are table stakes. What matters more is whether the team has actually operated inside your industry — a partner who has worked construction, freight, or retail operations will scope a project faster and avoid expensive rework.
Managed services vs. project-based engagements
Decide upfront whether you need a project (a defined piece of software, delivered and handed off) or a retainer (ongoing helpdesk, infrastructure monitoring, and incident response). Many Hong Kong SMEs need both — a build phase followed by ongoing managed support — and the contract structure should reflect that rather than forcing you into one model.
Time zone and language coverage
If your operations span Mainland China, Southeast Asia or the Gulf, ask how the vendor handles language and time-zone coverage for both delivery and support. A partner physically present in Hong Kong but coordinating delivery teams across Singapore, India and the UK can usually offer better always-on coverage than a single-location shop.
